February Wrap Up

Hello and welcome to my first blog post.

Seeing as February has just ended, I thought it was appropriate to do a little wrap up and show you all the books i've read during the last month. I haven't read many books as its difficult finding the time with being a final year uni student and that. I had to fit my recreational reading around my required reading for my course, essay writing, and exams.

Ok, lets jump into it.

Love, Rosie by Cecilia Ahern

This was the first book I read this month and its really got my into the swing of things. Love, Rosie (also known as Where Rainbows End) is about two best friends, Rosie and Alex, who have grown up together. However Alex and Rosie and soon separated when Alex moves to America and Rosie and Alexs lifes take two very different paths. This book is written entirely, well except the epilogue, in letters, emails, instant messaging etc., and shows how Alex and Rosies relationship changes as they grow older, experience different things, and fall in and out of love.

Throughout this book I enjoyed seeing the relationships between Rosie, Alex and their older siblings. Rosie and Alex would often write to their older siblings looking for advice, and this is one aspect i feel is greatly missed in the movie adaptation.

This book is such an easy read and didn't take me long at all to finish it. It was a nice story, although i could argue that it was a bit drawn out, and I have given Love, Rosie 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Room by Emma Donoghue

Room is told from the perspective of a 5 year old boy who has never been outside this one room. Jack has lived in one room his entire life with his mother, occasionally being visited at night by 'Old Nick' while Jack is asleep in the wardrobe. This story follows Jack and his mother as they try to escape, and Jack suddenly has to learn that the world does not only consist of Jack, 'Ma', and 'Old Nick'.

I thought this book was very well written and seemed authentic for a 5 year old who does not know what the world holds. However i did find the story to be very tedious. There were about 100-150 pages in the middle where i was gripped and I needed to know what happened next. Other than that, nothing really intrigued me.

I have given the book 3 out of 5 stars

The Casual Vacancy by J K Rowling

As the BBC has just shown the 3 part tv series adaptation of The Casual Vacancy, I thought now was better a time than any to read this book.

The Casual Vacancy follows the town of Pagford as one of the council members has suddenly died leaving a chair empty. Many members of Pagford wish to cut ties with The Fields, a sort of council estate type area which was built on the outskirts of Pagford, and keep Pagford clean and proper. One particular family, The Weedons, who live in the Fields many ties with Pagford, and this story follows the Weedons and many families living in Pagford during election time, and voting to keep or lose The Fields.

Whilst reading this book i was really sure of what the overall story line was until about part 5 when it all became clear to me. Despite being unsure of the storyline i found it a great book to read whilst relaxing. After learning of the lesson in the book i was touched, and even got a thump in my throat towards the end.

If you are wanting to read The Casual Vacancy because it is a J K Rowling book and you love Harry Potter, I would tell you to seriously think about you decision. If reading a book featuring sex, drugs, self harm etc. will ruin the magic of your childhood and J K Rowling then put the book down. If not i seriously recommend giving it a read.

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

Cadence has suffered amnesia following an accident, but what was the accident? and why will no body talk to her about it?

Thats all your getting.

I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars

Looking For Alaska by John Green

This book follows Miles though his first year at his new school where his life is completely changed. Miles has gone to boarding boarding school where he makes friends for the first time. Alaska is impulsive and wreckless, and despite her mood swings and standoffish behaviour sometimes, Miles is drawn towards her.

I found this this book didn't really have much going on until a little over half way through, when the twist happened. However the twist, and the resulting story, was enough to draw me back in as my curiosity, just like the colonels, wouldn't let me put the book down until i found out exactly what had happened.

Looking For Alaska isnt my favourite John Green Book, but i would recommend you giving it a read if you enjoy YA.

I gave this book 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Well there you go, my February Wrap up. Let me know what books you read this month and if you thing i should give them a go.

Take Care
Lisa

  1. I LOVED the Room, it was such a thought provoking title! I wasn't the biggest fan of Casual Vacancy, I like the mysteries she wrote under her other pen name better than Casual Vacancy!! I saw the ending of Looking for Alaska coming pretty early in the book, but I still enjoyed it!! I've never read We Were Liars....but it sounds really fascinating!! I will have to add it to my list!
